More Than a Program. A Promise.

OUR STORY

Legacy Equine Center and Sanctuary exists because when one chapter ended, two women were ready to write the next.

It Started with a Deal

In the early 1970s, a teenage girl named Geraldine O'Connor was caught riding her horse on the grounds of Jericho in Holyoke. Father Wagner, Jericho's founder, made her an offer: she could keep riding if she helped the children in his care connect with horses.
She said yes. That decision shaped the rest of her life.
What started as a handshake agreement grew into the Therapeutic Equestrian Center, one of the oldest PATH International certified equine therapy programs in the country. For over 40 years, TEC served thousands of children, adults, and veterans across the Pioneer Valley, helping riders build strength, confidence, and independence through the power of the horse.

Two Women. One Mission.

At the heart of TEC and Legacy Farm stands a partnership defined by passion, resilience, and a shared devotion to the transformative power of horses. Nora began her journey at TEC as a volunteer at just ten years old, her early enthusiasm blossoming into a lifelong commitment.
Over the years, she grew into the roles of instructor and barn manager, shaping the lives of countless riders and horses along the way. Gerry, meanwhile, guided the organization as Executive Director, bringing vision and leadership to every facet of its mission. Their friendship was forged through Equine Assisted Services; a field where horses are not merely animals, but trusted partners.
United by their dedication to these extraordinary creatures, Gerry and Nora recognized the unique gifts that therapeutic horses bring: patience, intuition, and a gentle strength that can sense and respond to the needs of every rider. In the specialized world of therapeutic riding, such horses are rare treasures, and to these women, they were nothing short of unicorns, magical beings whose quiet presence transformed lives every day. It was this deep appreciation for the horses and their impact that inspired Gerry and Nora to found Legacy Equine Center and Sanctuary.

Their vision was clear: to create a place where the bond between humans and horses could flourish, and where every individual—regardless of background or ability—could experience the joy and empowerment that comes from working with these remarkable animals.

Through their leadership, Legacy Equine Center and Sanctuary became more than just a sanctuary for horses; it became a community built on trust, empathy, and the belief that magic happens when people and animals come together with purpose. The legacy of Gerry and Nora continues to inspire all who walk through the red gate, reminding us that with dedication and heart, even the rarest unicorns can be found (and cherished) right here at home.

A Door Closes.
A New Chapter Begins.

In 2025, after 40 years of service, TEC's board made the difficult decision to close. They did so with the same care they had always shown: ensuring the horses, staff, volunteers, and riders were looked after, and celebrating the legacy they had built together.
Gerry and Nora saw an opportunity to carry that legacy forward. They took in the retiring horses. They kept the community together. And they founded Legacy Equine Center and Sanctuary to continue the work that had shaped both of their lives.
We opened our doors in 2025 and will begin mounted and unmounted programs in Spring 2026.

Be Part of the Herd

Every gift fuels our mission. Every volunteer strengthens our herd. Every participant reminds us why this work matters.

One Mission. Two Promises.

For Horses

We provide lifelong sanctuary for horses facing adoption challenges due to age, injury, medical conditions, or behavioral needs. Retired horses receive exquisite care and a peaceful home for life. Horses who are younger or have special needs may continue as therapeutic partners — but only if they thrive in that role. Their wellbeing always comes first.

For People

We offer equine-assisted programs for children, adults, and veterans navigating physical, emotional, and cognitive challenges. Our founders are fiercely protective of the vulnerable populations they serve, bringing decades of experience, compassion, and unwavering standards to every session.
